Boat Ski

do i need 2 batteries to add a fishfinder and trolling motor to my ski boat?
im connecting up alot of extra stuff and im concerned about the drain on the battery since it seems to have drained in the past without all the extra stuff….any tips on wiring would be helpful such as… do i need to run extras on an external battery or interconnect everything together
Your main engine’s alternator will not likely be able to keep a trolling battery charged.
Get yourself the biggest, heaviest marine deepcycle you can find, and a high quality charger to go with it. Run the trolling motor on it, separate from the cranking battery, and recharge the trolling battery soon as possible when you get off the water.
The T/M will have a plug on the end, you’ll need to buy a socket that matches, and install it somewhere on the bow (assuming a bow mount T/M). Run minimum 6 gauge wire from the battery to the T/M, use heavy duty crimp connectors. Use a circuit breaker of the size recommended by your T/M manufacturer (don’t omit this — a boat is no place for a fire). The further aft you position the battery, the better off it will be — batteries don’t like to be bounced around. Secure it securely.
Fishfinders’ amp draw is measured in milliamps — if it was any lower it’d be charging the battery. Hook it up to the cranking battery — you’d probably see a lot electrical noise from the trolling motor on the screen anyway.
Other hi-amp-draw accessories (powerful audio amp for example, or bait tank) can be run off the trolling battery, but I always run my pumps (bilge, livewell), lights, horn, etc. on the cranking batt, cause the motor keeps it charged.
Try bench-charging your cranking battery — maybe it’s suffering from chronic undercharge.
