Change Forces Choices

Change is inevitable. Resisting change is like trying to push water uphill. So given that fact coupled with the fact that most of us abhor change; we long for the good old days and wish everything would stay as it is, how do we proceed?

Firstly, I’m a great one for facing one’s problems. Face up to the new circumstances, the new challenges and commit to beating them. Like any general going into battle you need to assess the situation. It’s really very simple.
Ask yourself the following three questions:
1. Where am I now?
2. Where do I want to be?
3. How do I get there?

Very often we’re overcome by the ever bigger hurdles in front of us. We become overwhelmed, depressed and we quit. Firstly give yourself a pat on the back for how far you’ve come. One of my favourite sayings is this:

We shouldn’t just focus on the mountain
Of unattainable goals yet to be climbed
But periodically stop to enjoy the view
From the vantage point we’ve reached

Secondly realise that there is only one way to eat an elephant and that is one bite at a time. Set your ultimate goal, and then break it down into smaller and smaller goals all working towards achieving the big goal, then simply, one bite at a time, tackle one goal at a time.

A famous runner who ran the breadth of the USA when asked how he had done it replied “I simply ran to the next telegraph pole”.

Anyway, back to the list. What do you want to achieve. This sounds really crazy but the truth is most people don’t really know what they want out of life. They have a vague idea that includes happiness, success, health, financial security but these are all generic goals. You need to focus on specific goals. You need to think about them every night when you go to bed and every morning when you wake up. You need to programme your subconscious to come up with plans on how to get what you want, but you can’t do that if you don’t know what they are. Give it serious thought and write down what your goals are. Man thinks in pictures so you need to have a firm in-focus picture in your head of you having achieved your goal.

Secondly, Where am I now? A simple question but very difficult to answer with open honesty and courage. You could delude yourself as to how far along your path you are. It is essential you get a clear understanding of where you are.

Once you have these two questions beat we come to the final one: How do I close the gap? Change forces choices. You need to embrace change. You need to focus on the opportunities and not the negatives. We don’t always get to choose the factors that come into our lives but we do choose how we respond. Whether you decide to beat the threat or let it beat you, you will succeed. It becomes your perceived reality; a self-fulfilling prophecy.

We can only manage change if we are constantly improving ourselves. We may never close the gap. Once you arrive at your original goal you will probably find that where you want to be is now equally far off, but appreciate where you’ve come from and how much you’ve achieved. For in continually trying to close this gap lies the process of personal growth.

Success is not measured by what a man achieves, but by the opposition he has encountered along the way, and the courage with which he has maintained the struggle against overwhelming odds.
