Does superstardom make a person attractive who would otherwise be a “loser”?
Imagine this situation: A dorky, weird, ugly person suddenly wins fame by starring in some breakout movie or aweing people with his/her voice as a new singer in the industry. Without those, they would just be a normal person who isn’t very popular. I’ve noticed that people who go through this suddenly are found attractive. Take for example, Clay Aiken on American Idol. Without what he went through on American Idol, he’d probably still be picked on as some loser who would still be wearing glasses because Simon didn’t tell him to stop doing so. So ultimately, my question is…in our society, does superstardom make a person attractive, where as if they didn’t gain stardom, they would be very neutral and unpopular. Please answer this in the perspective of reality in our culture, and not in terms of your own ideals of what should make a person attractive/likeable.
I had a conversation with a friend of mine back in high school about this. Another example of what you are speaking of is the lead singer of Weezer. He isn’t necessarily a very attractive guy, but because what he does and the group he is in there is actually girls out there that just find him adorable. Regrettably stardom does open a lot of doors for people that should otherwise be open anyways, but yet aren’t. That is a terrible thing our society dictates. Oh course, flip side, a lot of the times you looks play a huge part of how you become a star to begin with, so at that perspective is there really a difference? Well that is definitely something to think about.
