melatonin 3mg slow or rapid release?
I have been taking melatonin 3mg rapid release for about 9 months. Is it ok to be taking it for this long and would I get a better sleep if I took the slow release? I tend to wake up in the night but I fall back to sleep again.
It’s not so much that it’s “bad” to take it for that long (although taking sleeping pills long-term isn’t generally a good idea), but it’s more that it shouldn’t be needed for that long. Melatonin really helps to reset your sleep cycle (for lack of a better term) so most people don’t need to take it longer than a month or so.
One thing to note is that Melatonin helps Serotonin production… but what many people don’t realize is that Serotonin is the hormone responsible for both sleeping AND waking cycles. In fact, that might be part of the reason you’re waking up in the middle of the night because when your body gets too much Serotonin, it is actually the signal to wake up (which is also the reason that some people take large doses of Melatonin and can’t fall asleep).
Granted, there are some people who have problems when they take it longer because their brain gets the subconscious idea that they need a pill to fall asleep so they have trouble sleeping without it. If you’re at that point, it’ll be a little tougher to stop it, but you can still stop if you don’t feel you need it.
As a side note, I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding this part or not, but I definitely wouldn’t take both the quick release and the slow release if they are both 3 mg doses. If you are waking up in the middle of the night, I would try stopping the Melatonin first to see if that fixes the problem… if it doesn’t, then try a time-released Melatonin.
