What does the number of sections in mainlines mean ?

I mean in ropes!

Your answer doesn’t make much sense. I’ve seen some lines with colored lengths on boats where each color represents a certain length. You may also be talking about the turns of rope to and from the pulleys on the boom of a larger boat that are only there to give a greater mechanical advantage when pulling in the sail. If you gave more information such as the type, class or size of the sailboat you are talking about it might help.
