Why do some religious people seem to have the idea that Atheists are self-centered?

I have seen many answers here by theists who take digs insisting that Atheists are self-centered, like “the Atheist God; themselves” or that we have some kind of ego that makes us not want to believe in God because that would mean we believe that there’s something greater than ourselves.. why would anyone believe this garbage?

That’s one of the lines they’re fed. You’re right, it makes no sense.
