How do you build a speaker box?
We are wanting to put a complete marine radio in a speaker box to fit on the front rack of a 4 wheeler.
Depends on your needs. Do you want just noise or do you want fidelity. If you just want to have some sound over the roar of off-road tires on asphalt then you need a big box if you want bass. Speaker box design is a compromise. Size, SPL, Fidelity are all the trade-offs you have to make. For you weather proofing is another added problem to overcome. You can forget most speaker box materials like HDF, MDF or birch plywood for outdoors use. You need metal or plastic. I have made speaker boxes and stereo electronics enclosures out of plastic ice chests with the electronics inside the lid. I have made sealed enclosure speaker boxes out of 3/4″ lexan filled with rock wool insulation. I have made speakers out of 1/2″ honeycomb aluminum sandwich between 12mil aluminum sheets. I have tried foam filled plastic sandwich material , fiberglass and carbon fiber. Both have some rather undesirable acoustic properties.
Only the ice chest speaker boxes were cheap so that we could float the river with music, sounded like crap but better than nothing. None of the rest were done to save money. The size and audio quality constraints dictated a custom box.
Remember that the electronics take up room in the box and must be accounted for in the design as they take up space and the size must be adjusted upwards to account for their volumn.
