Tower Speakers
Is it necessary to match the front tower speakers with the center channel?
I have a pair of Klipsch RF52 II and I just bought a Definitive Technology Mythos three center speaker. Is having unmatched tower speakers/center channel going to compromise the sound quality of my system? My intention was to get a blend of sound qualities from both company. Let me know if this is dumb and speakers do not work like water color where you blend red and blue to get purple.
It’s best to have all matched speakers.
Every speaker system has a different frequency response thumbprint. Matching those frequency responses will result in a uniform sound. Mixing and matching will result in harsh conflict between the two different response patterns.
You also need to think about timber. Timbre is the acoustic properties signature to the particular speaker. An analogy would be a guitar and a banjo. Both instruments can be playing the same note, but you can distinguish between the two different instruments because of their timber or the overtones that the particular instrument produces. Each speak system also produces specific overtones depending on not only the drivers, but their configuration and the types of wood (or plastic) used for the enclosures. Mixing different speakers will once again result in conflicting timbre.
Is it “necessary” to match your speakers? Certainly not. But it is highly recommended if you want quality sound.
